Smart lighting is rapidly developing, and the lighting market is experiencing rapid growth.
In recent years, smart lighting has been more talk than action, not truly widespread. However, in 2017, with diverse products, continuous technological advancements, a maturing industrial ecosystem, and active promotion by manufacturers, the global smart lighting market entered a phase of rapid development. According to data from the LED Research Center (LEDinside), the global smart lighting market size approached 4.6 billion USD in 2017, with an annual growth rate of 95%, and it is expected to reach 13.4 billion USD by 2020.
Currently, the global smart lighting market still relies on the continuous expansion of public infrastructure, with smart city construction being a key driver. With government support, major cities around the world are vigorously promoting smart city plans, and the pace of construction is expected to accelerate, thus the application of smart lighting in the public sector will develop preferentially.
With government-led promotion, the social acceptance of smart lighting has increased. Smart lighting has advantages such as energy saving, convenience, and ease of control, and the rise of the Internet of Things has made it necessary for companies to adopt connected lighting. Therefore, the demand for smart lighting in the commercial and industrial lighting markets is growing rapidly. Data from LEDinside shows that in 2017, industrial and commercial lighting accounted for 60% of the global smart lighting market size. With digital development, smart lighting will bring more new business models and value enhancement to these two fields.
In contrast, although the number of households actually using smart lighting is still small, as consumer living standards improve, related policies (such as smart city extension policies) promote it, and manufacturers push for it, the application of smart home lighting will gradually become widespread. LEDinside estimates that in 2017, residential lighting accounted for 23% of the global smart lighting market size, and this proportion is expected to increase to 31% by 2020. In the coming years, smart lighting and smart homes will develop in tandem, becoming the fastest-growing application area.
In recent years, global lighting manufacturers have adopted different strategies to accelerate transformation and upgrading, successively abandoning low-profit general lighting to focus on the currently more profitable and promising smart lighting. Rapidly developing manufacturers include Philips Lighting, OSRAM, Cree, GE, LEDVANCE, LIFX, and Acuity Brands. Chinese manufacturer Opple Lighting has achieved interconnectivity between lighting products and remote control of smart terminals through product research and cross-industry cooperation (for example, collaborating with Huawei to launch smart home product sets); Feilo Acoustics and Zhouming Technology are vigorously promoting smart streetlights, mainly undertaking related projects from the Chinese government. Taiwanese manufacturer Lite-On Technology announced in August 2017 that it joined the Stanford Digital City Alliance program, and is currently developing smart monitoring solutions along with cameras and communication modules in addition to streetlights.
